PORTLAND
HEAD LIGHT
and the
LIGHTHOUSES of
Maine's
Casco Bay
___________________________________
Portland Head Light is the first and
the oldest of all Maine's lighthouses. It is one of the most beautiful
lighthouses in America located in Casco Bay at the entrance of Portland
Harbor. There was once seven lighthouses (Portland Breakwater, Spring
Point Ledge, Ram Island Ledge, Halfway Rock, Portland Head, Cape Elizabeth
East and Cape Elizabeth West) that marked the waters of Casco Bay and
Portland Harbor and one lightship.
This is an ideal opportunity to get to grips with one of the oldest
lighthouses in the region, and certainly one that has helped its fair
share of ships. Portland Head Light was constructed in the late 18th
century under George Washington, who became President of the United States
during its construction.
It is currently maintained by the Coast Guard, and is still very much in
use! Whether you're a historian
or a Party Poker pro
with a taste for incredible architecture, then this is a great
example of a building completed during the turbulent opening years of the
struggle for America's independence.
